Formal Academic Examination

2024 OCR A Level Chemistry: 269/270

A* Grade · 99.6% Raw Mark

How the student learned

In the June 2024 examination series, a Catalyst student sat the full OCR A Level Chemistry specification (H432), dropping just 1 mark across the entire suite of 3 papers to achieve 269 out of a possible 270 raw marks.

This result was not achieved through passive lectures or repetitive past-paper drilling. The student followed our core four-part methodology:

  • Personalised progression: Instruction proceeded strictly at the student's mastery rate. When a concept was secured, the curriculum advanced immediately, eliminating dead time.
  • AI-augmented retrieval: The student utilized synthetic question generators to test multi-step synthesis pathways, reaction kinetics, and edge-case stereochemistry mechanisms daily.
  • Teacher-supervised mastery: Every AI-assisted learning module was reviewed and audited by a subject specialist chemist. The student completed regular viva defenses explaining reaction thermodynamics orally before faculty.
  • Project-based foundation: Theoretical equations were grounded in empirical laboratory practicals and computational molecular modeling, treating the formal exam not as an ultimate summit, but as an easily cleared baseline.
"The exam was simply a formal audit of knowledge the student had already applied, questioned, and defended in project work for two years."

Systems & Cybersecurity

A 14-year-old ranked #3 in the UK on TryHackMe

National Top 3 · Age 14

The TryHackMe progression

The student joined us at 12 with no cybersecurity experience; ranked #3 in the UK by 14 on TryHackMe, an internationally recognized training platform used by professional penetration testers and enterprise security engineers.

Cybersecurity competence cannot be gained through memorisation. The student's progression rested on continuous, practical execution:

  • Zero-to-one immersion: Arriving at age 12 with no prior terminal experience, the student was introduced directly to Linux systems administration, bash automation, and TCP/IP networking fundamentals.
  • Practical attack/defense labs: Progressed through hundreds of live virtual machine rooms, decomposing buffer overflows, privilege escalation vectors, cryptographic vulnerabilities, and web application attack surfaces.
  • AI-augmented vulnerability auditing: Used local language models to inspect decompiled code, analyze network captures, and explain novel exploit mechanics, always logging prompts and documenting root causes.
  • Defensive ethics & viva verification: Every milestone was paired with rigorous faculty oversight ensuring strict legal and defensive boundaries. The student orally defended mitigation strategies for every exploited system.
"The ranking reflects thousands of solved engineering puzzles in real virtualized environments, authenticated on public leaderboards."

Global Engineering Challenge

Qualifying Team, ANA Avatar XPRIZE

1 of 77 Teams Worldwide

A school team among world research labs

The ANA Avatar XPRIZE was an international competition backed by a $10M purse, challenging teams to create a physical, non-autonomous avatar system that allows a human operator to see, hear, move, and interact in a remote location in real time.

Catalyst participated as an independent school team. Out of hundreds of global applicant entities, our students were selected by the international judging panel as a Qualified Team — one of only 77 teams worldwide, and one of only two teams from England (alongside the University of Sheffield).

  • Full hardware fabrication: Students designed and machined the physical chassis from raw aluminium in our workshop rather than assembling off-the-shelf toy kits.
  • Edge computer vision: Developed an embedded stereo vision pipeline utilizing OpenCV on Raspberry Pi hardware accelerated with an Intel Neural Compute Stick.
  • Bespoke haptic feedback: Engineered custom mechanical actuators providing physical touch telemetry directly back to the human operator deck.
  • Safe power engineering: Assembled custom lithium-ion battery management circuitry to power high-torque servo linkages.
"While international travel to the in-person semifinals was halted due to COVID-19 restrictions, the engineering rigour established here formed the blueprint for the entire Catalyst school model."
